ABOUT THIS LIVESTREAM
Virtual Railfan’s live train view in Sweetwater, Tennessee, is located at the Sweetwater Depot & Visitors Center, a 2016 replica station honoring the town’s long railroad history. This view overlooks Norfolk Southern’s West End District, which runs from Knoxville to Ooltewah, TN, where it connects with NS’s H Line toward Chattanooga and Atlanta. The line sees an average of 15 trains per day.
Sweetwater was first settled in the 1820s and grew rapidly when the East Tennessee & Georgia Railroad arrived in 1852. Its strategic location made it a key Civil War supply center and the site of multiple military engagements. In 1894, it became part of the newly formed Southern Railway, later merging into Norfolk Southern in 1982. A highlight of the site today is the “Sweetwater” passenger car — ex-Southern Railway Coach 811, built in 1941 by Pullman-Standard — which served on “The Pelican” between New York and New Orleans. The car was placed downtown in Circle Park in 1981 and now serves as the Chamber of Commerce office.
