These videos document wild barn owl behavior for education, research, and conservation. We do not stage or intervene.

About the Nest Boxes

These boxes are monitored as part of research at the Shamir Research Institute and the University of Haifa (Israel). Cameras are installed before eggs are laid or after all nestlings hatch to avoid disturbance. Camera boxes represent only a small portion of the pairs we monitor.

Some nests fail due to food shortages, which is a natural process in wild populations.

Nest Cleanliness

Barn owls lack a sense of smell and bring dead prey to nests; some may rot. Owls also regurgitate pellets and do not clean nests. Natural sites remain this way until they collapse or fill up.
We clean nest boxes once per year, making them cleaner than natural nests. Cleaning too often may cause nest abandonment and remove beneficial insects.

Adults are not banded, so we cannot confirm if the same pair breeds each year.
