Daerim Station is an interchange on Seoul Subway Line 2 (station 233) and Line 7 (station 744). The Line 2 platforms sit at 351 Dorimcheon-ro in Guro-dong (Guro-gu), while the Line 7 platforms are beneath 137 Dorim-ro in Daerim-dong (Yeongdeungpo-gu).
Since November 1992 the station’s secondary name has been Guro-gu Office, even though the Line 7 side actually lies in Yeongdeungpo-gu. Historically, Daerim-dong was carved out of Sindorim-dong only in 1980, and during the planning stages this station was provisionally called “Sindorim-dong Station.” Although the Guro-gu Office annex appears on signage, it’s a good 1.1 km (about an 18-minute walk from Exit 4), earning the name extra notoriety alongside other controversial Seoul station subtitles.
Despite the similarity, Daerim Station has no connection to the “Daelim” companies (Daelim Industrial, Daelim Automobile, Daelim Bus, Daelim University); the station romanizes as “Daerim.”
Stepping off Line 2, you’re greeted by a bustling alley that feels straight out of Beijing—employment agencies, labor centers, and a row of bars line the way. In fact, the mid-film of the Korean movie Midnight Runners briefly shows one of Daerim’s exits.
Daerim is known for its large Chinese and Korean-Chinese (Joseonjok) communities, especially in Daerim 2-dong. You’ll find Seoul’s de facto “Chinatown” around Daerim Central Market, while groups practice tai-chi–style exercises by the riverside at Daerim Playground. Neighborhood eateries and pubs cater to this international crowd, serving everything from hearty Northeastern Chinese hot pot and malatang to lamb skewers—though, as always, quality can vary by venue. Outside of Daerim, only the area near Namguro Station (Gareebong-dong) rivals it in foreigner population.
If you exit Line 2 toward the Guro-gu Office side, a short walk leads you to the bustling Namguro Market. Heading the other direction toward Sindorim, you’ll pass the linear Guro Street Park.
Across from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s Guro Library you can spot the Korea SGI headquarters and the Hwagwang Newspaper office from the Dorimcheon overpass. Nearby are the headquarters of Boseong Transport (Guro-dong) and the Guro branch of Hannam Passenger Transport—formerly the Taejin Transport branch until its routes and building were transferred on March 1, 2023.
